Cut Letters with Sally Wightkin
It is limiting to view calligraphy as only being paper and ink—a flat representation of our beloved art. Our hands-on program in September gave us a unique opportunity to view our letters as more than words but as shapes with a heft and weight that allows them to stand slightly apart from the underlying paper and be seen in a new way. The art of cut letters is wide spread—very wide spread and practiced by so many of the luminaries in the calligraphy field. Our delightful instructor, Sally, showed us many examples of how the careful cutting and layering of letters allows for a new showcasing of the calligraphic arts. With a detailed presentation and excellent handouts, we were all carefully (and bloodlessly) guided on this delightful journey and discovery.
