Program Description

Join us to create your own Tiny Toothpick Journal using the piano hinge book construction. We will unlock the “mystery” of this clever construction under Georgia’s skilled instruction.

Materials:

Text pages: 24 sheets text paper (copy paper weight) cut to 2” x 5” (these will be folded in half)

Cover: two pieces heavier weight paper (cover weight - card stock weight) cut to 2 1/4” x 5 1/4” (these will also be folded in half)

Thread: waxed linen thread (or linen thread waxed yourself with bees wax)

Embellishment options: Twine, rubber bands, bits of paper. markers, etc.

Hinge Pins: toothpicks (options: kitchen skewers, pipe cleaners, matches, etc.)*

*Length of toothpicks (matches, or kitchen skewers) needed as lynch pins in these small books: The height of these books is 2" so you will need toothpicks that measure at least 2 1/2 " or more, in length, three inches would be best for first time work on this book form. I often use wooden kitchen skewers and cut them to size using a craft knife.

Cutting jig (we will make one together)

Tools:

Craft knife

Ruler

Pencil

PVA (options: Elmer’s Glue or gluesticks)

Bone folder (optional)

Erasers

Post it tape or other light-tack tape

Needles (to fit thread being used)

Georgia’s inspiration for this construction is found in: Cover to Cover by Shereen LaPlantz.
