THE LUTTRELL PSALTER

Lecture by: Della Hutchison

Outlandish ... Wild ... Fantastical ... Grotesque .... No matter what adjective you choose to describe the Luttrell Psalter, it isn't enough. Janet Backhouse describes this 14th-century masterpiece as “one of the most famous manuscripts in the world.” The British Library’s website calls it “... one of the most striking [manuscripts] to survive from the Middle Ages.”

Hyperbole aside, there’s a practical reason for scribes to be familiar with this manuscript: From scenes of everyday rural life to fantastical creatures drawn from the artists' imagination, it is filled with images that we can easily adapt for work. (Not to mention being the source of one of the most exuberant calligraphic hands ever!)

The Luttrell Psalter is one of the most famous medieval manuscripts because of its rich illustrations of everyday life in the 14th century along with a rich Gothic text and highly decorated pages. It was not the first to include scenes of contemporary rustic life, but it is exceptional in their number and fascinating detail. Its lively and often humorous images provide a virtual 'documentary' of work and play during a year on an estate.

Join us on February 18, 2023, as we explore this amazing manuscript's history and creators as well as its images and their application.

Della Hutchison has developed a following as an engaging, knowledgeable and delightful presenter on some of the world's greatest manuscripts. As a lecturer and teacher professionally, she presents information in a structured and easy to learn manner but keeps it interesting and fun. As a highly esteemed calligrapher and illuminator, she understands the technicalities of our craft and can talk to the details so that we can learn how to reproduce the text and artwork. She works from Pennsylvania and will be joining us on Zoom with her excellent presentation, graphics and handouts. Please register for this unique opportunity to learn about one of the world's most fascinatingly weird, strange, fascinating and gorgeous manuscripts, the Luttrell Psalter.
