Basic Gothic Hand

with Member, Anne Kaese

Up and Down! Straight! March!

The fun of Gothic is that it is about rules and rhythm. Learning a gothic hand and lettering with gouache as your writing fluid are both vital skills for any calligrapher of any skill level.

So join us for a fun and colorful class.

Handouts will be distributed to registered students the day before so you can print them out.

Home-work will be encouraged and if you submit on Padlet (we will show you how) then your name will be entered for a drawing.

Supplies:

Calligraphy nib: your favorite dip pen size 2mm or 2.5mm Tape or Brause or Speedball C-3, Mitchell 1 or 1.5 or Parallel Pen 2.4mm (check here for a handy nib equivalent chart created by Reggie Ezell - shared with permission)

Pen holder: your favorite. (check here for one of Anne’s favorite holders)

Tube Watercolor or Gouache: At least 2 primary colors (Schmincke, Nicker or Winsor Newton are good brands) or if you have many colors already - have your favorites handy.

Paper: Mixed media, layout bond, or marker paper. Copy paper may work in a pinch, but something a little heavier is recommended

A 6-well palette (This or equivalent)

Small container for water

Small lint-free cloth (like a square of an old t-shirt)

Small watercolor paint brush for mixing your paint

A little about Anne

An artist, communicator, educator, medievalist, learner and wonderer – could be wanderer too

I started doing calligraphy when I was twelve. As a young adult, I took formal classes and have since had the privilege of studying with some wonderful teachers from England, the US, Europe and Africa.

My art work now focuses on lettering, color, illumination, fine detail painting and related aspects of calligraphy and watercolor painting.

I have a busy teaching schedule in the area as well as presenting workshops out of town and on Zoom. Commissions and other work occupy the rest of my work time too.

I am active in many non-profits for art and music in the area, and volunteer my services in the community where you will often find me doing calligraphy bookmarks at events at schools or in the community.

Member Programs are free for members. However, members are encouraged to bring guests who can attend one free program in a season.
