Chinese Calligraphy and Culture: History, Characters, Scripts and Tools

Presented by: Hong Zhang

Hong is a Chinese brushwork artist and instructor with a passion for the cultural and poetic aspects of Asian art forms. Inspired by nature, he creates works of Chinese calligraphy and landscape paintings in both traditional and contemporary styles. Hong has been teaching for more than twenty years at the University of Minnesota and in his private studio using a method he developed for teaching western students. Hong served as the calligraphy judge for annual Sumi-e Society of America Calligraphy exhibitions in 2012 and 2019. He currently resides in Bloomington with his wife, Ching.

On Friday evening, Hong will offer a history of the relationship between Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese characters, including the five calligraphy scripts (Seal, Li, Regular, Running and Casual) and the “four treasures” – the tools used by the calligrapher. He will discuss how Chinese calligraphy is used both as a way to deliver a message and as a form of art in itself.

Please visit Hong’s website. It is full of beautiful images and so much information about hit and his passion to teach Chinese Calligraphy & Culture.
