Winter Play Day
Hosted by: Sally Wightkin & Anne Kaese
This is a FREE HYBRID event open to all members & non-members
Join us HERE if you wish to join us online
OR
Join one of the small groups meeting around the Twin Cities! These small groups will join the online meeting so we will all be together!
Where you can join IN PERSON:
Maple Grove Library - Sally will host attendees in Room 105
Fargo, ND - Anne will host attendees at her home - members can get her address on the Members Only page
We encourage members to host a small group somewhere (your house, your local library, your local Panera, or anywhere with WiFi) where you can join the rest of us! Find members who live near you and see what can happen. If you would like us to “advertise” your small group to encourage other members to join, we can help (we won’t post private information - just help members reach out to each other if they are interested). Let us know at workshops@colleaguesofcalligraphy.com
Schedule:
12:00 - Tech check for those who might need it. Come early and settle in.
12:30 - Meet & Greet / Sharing & Caring
12:45-1:15 - News, Updates, & Other Happenings
Program starts at 1:15
We wish you all light and joy as the shortest day of the year approaches!
Bring your favorite beverage. Slippers optional but highly recommended.
No mess (unless you want to). Nothing too serious - we are all busy but a little playtime is good for us. Invite a friend to join you at home* for this relaxed time.
with Sally:
The “double-pencil” is a great tool to use for creating outlines of large letters - leaving endless possibilities for adding color and texture to the resulting letters. Edward Johnston and many of his students who went on to be teachers themselves (Dorothy Mahoney, for example), found the double pencil a useful tool to show students the calligraphic “magic” of holding a consistent pen angle and the thicks & thins, and lovely negative-spaces hat resulted.
We’re not going to get as technical as Mr. Johnston; we are just going to witness the magic of the double-pencil to create (review) a simple gothic/blackletter. Once you’ve had a little bit of time creating some double-pencil letters, Sally will share a few ideas to fill, shade, add color to your letters.
Supplies:
2 pencils - #2, colored pencils, Inktense pencils, any 2 (similar size best) you like
A small variety of markers, gel-pens, crayons, more pencils or other favorites for letter decorating and shading.
Small rubber band
