Presentation by Michael Sull

For everyone who is interested in Spencerian and Ornamental Penmanship, it is always encouraging to view the superlative work of the past Masters online as they are visible on a computer monitor. And yet, it is nothing short of Magical to see the authentic specimens with your own eyes “up close and personal”, and at their original size.

For our Friday evening program, I wish to share with you the incomparable artwork of original specimens, and as a very special and rare opportunity, to see first-hand the original-size specimens of the absolutely legendary Horace Healey Collection from the Zaner-Bloser Company.

The specimens from this particular Collection are not the originals, but they are extremely high (1,200 dpi) resolution museum-quality prints that I personally had professionally scanned from the originals over a decade ago. Although the scans are available online, few people ever have the opportunity to study this amazing assortment of artwork at the actual size in which it was created over a century ago.

These specimens are truly incredible, from various script and ornamental alphabets to the fabulous magazine covers commissioned for the Business Educator magazines. By seeing these at their original size and in such exquisite detail, I will point out and explain the nuances of line, shade, and design that are so difficult to see when reduced in size upon a computer screen. In addition to my explanations, the specimens will be on exhibit for everyone to personally examine and photograph as they desire.

It will truly be an evening of wonder, and as an additional item of interest, everyone present will be given an actual century-old print block of vintage penmanship from the Zanerian Print Block Collection. In this way, everyone will have a true, authentic artifact from our unique penmanship era to take home and keep. These were the printing blocks featuring penmanship specimens from the old Masters that were used to print onto the pages of the Zanerian’s Business Educator magazines.

I can promise that it will be an evening you won’t want to miss and won’t forget. Please join us that evening, and for our entire workshop if possible, for a trip back in time to the beauty, techniques, and history of America’s Golden Age of Penmanship! I hope to see you there!
