Blackletter Double-Trouble

Lecture and Hands On Experience by Della Hutchison

Della Hutchison will delight us again with a journey through a magical page of pointy and diamond letters that are magical and fun to create.

Take your Blackletter to a new - pointy - level! Folio 125 in Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta (86.MV.527.125), above, will have you seeing double!

We will focus on recreating these ornate lowercase letters, including their exuberant embellishments. This script is suitable for beginning as well as experienced calligraphers, but ALL (yes, even illuminators!) are welcome to marvel at the calligrapher's artistry along with the rest of us.

The class will alternate between a visual presentation about the manuscript with hands-on practice.

This class will be recorded to allow participants to review the techniques presented. If being recorded is a concern for you, you are welcome to turn off your camera and change your name as it appears on the screen.

Supplies:

  • 2 or 3 blank pieces of paper (to place under working copy to prevent bleed-through)

  • a sheet of tracing paper

  • note-taking supplies (2 different color pens or a pen and highlighter advised)

  • 3.5mm nib and holder or 3.8mm Parallel pen

  • handouts to print prior to program will be sent to Members along with link to join

  • handouts to print prior to program will be sent to nonmembers when they reserve their seat.

A little about della hutchison

Della Hutchison has developed a following as an engaging, knowledgeable and delightful presenter on some of the world's greatest manuscripts. As a lecturer and teacher professionally, she presents information in a structured and easy-to-learn manner but keeps it interesting and fun. As a highly esteemed calligrapher and illuminator, she understands the technicalities of our craft and can talk to the details so that we can learn how to reproduce the text and artwork. She works from Pennsylvania and will be joining us on Zoom with her excellent presentation, graphics and handouts.
