Blackletter Double-Trouble
Lecture and Hands On Experience by Della Hutchison
Della Hutchison will delight us again with a journey through a magical page of pointy and diamond letters that are magical and fun to create.
Double-Decker Blackletter: Organized Chaos!
With its double-stacked letters and tangled tendril flourishes, the lettering found on folio 125 of the Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta (86.MV.527.125) might look indecipherable … but it’s not!
After a brief introduction to this amazing medieval manuscript, Della will walk you through how she deciphered this unique variation of Gothic Textura Quadrata and then, in the hands-on portion, deconstruct the ductus for this wildly exuberant script.
Students familiar with Gothic Textura Quadrata will benefit more from this class, but all are welcome to marvel at the calligrapher's artistry.
Those wishing to participate in the hands-on portion should print the worksheets (sized for a 3.5 mm nib) ahead of time. The link for the worksheets – along with additional resources – will be shared with registered attendees a few days before the program.
Supplies:
2 or 3 blank pieces of paper (to place under working copy to prevent bleed-through)
a sheet of tracing paper
note-taking supplies (2 different color pens or a pen and highlighter advised)
3.5mm nib and holder or 3.8mm Parallel pen
handouts to print prior to program will be sent to Members along with link to join
handouts to print prior to program will be sent to nonmembers when they reserve their seat.
A little about della hutchison
My interest in calligraphy was kindled when my freshman college roommate loaned me her Speedball Handbook. It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered that calligraphy was done with special pens and ink, not just tracing and filling in the letters with a Sharpie marker!
Since then, I’ve enjoyed researching and recreating traditional styles and techniques. As a history buff, I especially love examining specific manuscripts and reproducing the scripts used in them.
When I retired from teaching public school in 2018 – I taught middle school language arts for 30+ years – one of the things I looked forward to most was being able to spend more time improving my calligraphy …. and sharing my passion for historic scripts with others.
Thank you for the invitation to share with you (from my home in Pennsylvania) one of the most amazing medieval manuscripts in existence today.
