Registration for workshops opens 8 weeks in advance of the workshop. Cost of the workshop is $135 with a $8 supply fee to be collected the first day of the workshop.
Workshop is from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. both days.
Roman letterforms are the essential “bones” of all western calligraphic lettering. Participants will work with a chisel-edged brush to gain a better understanding and greater confidence in use of Roman letterforms. We will work on a fairly large scale—all the better to grasp why and where those thicks and thins occur; how a beautiful curve feels; and strong plus graceful proportions. Good spacing will also be covered. We'll have fun with this ‘large-muscle’ lettering!
Supply List
Students will purchase a chisel-edge brush from the instructor for $8.
Bring these items to class:
Large (18” x 24” minimum) pad of paper. Doesn’t have to be expensive paper; newspaper is okay if not too “bleedable.”
Water jar
Tube of black or dark color gouache or watercolor
Container for mixing gouache. Best if rectangular or square because of the flat sides.
Any smaller gouache mixing brush
Pencil and longer ruler (24” minimum)
If you have a copy of Fr. Catich’s Origin of the Serif, bring it along.
