Sign Painting Resurgence: Readability is Still the Name of the Game

Mike's presentation will focus on readability being the top priority in his craft. Readability always separates the good signs from the bad. He will also share many tips and tricks he has collected over his more than 30 years in the sign making business.

Mike Meyer’s hometown is Mazeppa, Minnesota, but in 2020 he moved to Chester, Iowa, population 120 and lives in a church built in 1947. He spends much of his time on the road teaching workshops and attending Letterheads events. With over 30 years in the trade there isn’t much that Mike hasn’t painted, or painted on, but he’s always open to new and exciting ventures in the sign game. Mike was profiled in the Sign Painters film and book, and his work has been recognized by the Type Directors Club. In his own words; “Nothing can replace the ‘power’ of what a brush in your hand can produce.”

"Over the past 10 years or so we have truly witnessed a resurgence in sign painting. This appears to have been driven by business and consumer desire for a human touch in their interactions, something that comes naturally from a hand-painted sign, less so from a digital screen." - Sam Roberts (from Forward in Mike Meyer's book Sign Painting, A Practical Guide to Tools, Materials, and Techniques.
